This Funadansu(Sea Captain's Chest) was made in the late Edo period or early Meiji period(1800-1900). It served as a repository for valuables brought aboard merchant ships, designed to safeguard its contents even in the event of shipwrecks and prevent them from sinking into the sea. It is believed that at that time, it was used to store money or business ledgers.
