This incense burner features the classic and popular motifs of waves and dragons. The waves are depicted in verdigris, while the dragon is gold plate, representing a "rising dragon" rising powerfully from the water to the sky. Unlike Western dragons, dragons in East Asia are considered auspicious symbols. In Japan, where rice cultivation is central, the dragon is revered as "Suijin", the god of water, who brings beneficial rain and is deeply venerated by the people.
