The Tenryū is a dragon that guards the Celestial Palace, where the Heavenly Emperor of China is believed to reside. In ancient Chinese thought, the Heavenly Emperor is considered a god, and the emperor is considered the son of the Heavenly Emperor. The emperor rules the world based on the mandates (heavenly decrees) issued by the Heavenly Emperor. If the emperor governs well, the Heavenly Emperor will send auspicious beasts like phoenixes, dragons, and qilins. Conversely, if the emperor rules poorly, it is believed that a revolution will occur. It seems that many people buy the Tenryū with the intention of having it protect their homes powerfully.
