In Japan, the dragon rising to the sky has long been a popular and auspicious motif, symbolizing good fortune. Even today, this motif is widely used in paintings, sculptures, and tattoos. 
Numerous Japanese documents record the appearance of dragons. The oldest such record, apart from myths, is found in the "Nihon Shoki" of 680 AD. A more recent account from July 1735 states, "Around 10 a.m., it suddenly rained, and a dragon ascended to the heavens from the area around Hama Goten." Hama Goten is now known as the Hama-rikyu Gardens in Tokyo. Hama Goten was the shogun's villa at that time, and this event took place in the heart of Edo.
Unlike Western dragons, Japanese dragons are revered and worshipped beings.
